Penfield Boys win state volleyball title

The Penfield boys volleyball team walked into the gym Aug. 17 with three goals: to win sectionals, to win regionals, and to win the state title.

On Saturday, the Patriots completed their list and won the Division I state title against Smithtown West-XI.

“A group of young men won today, but it was all the players in the program,” 21-year coach Mike Fusare said. “They worked so hard together, are all so close, and all of us won the championship today.”

Penfield won the final match 25-15, 25-18, 25-22, and state Tournament MVP Jack Bittker notched 40 kills on the day.

“The recognition feels good, but sharing this moment with my teammates is even better,” Bittker said.

Jordan Solomon, Peter Klembczyk and Andy Scott were also named to the All-Tournament Team. Solomon had 95 assists, Klembcyzk added 45 digs, and Scott kicked in 20 kills for Penfield

“People only see the results on the floor,” Fusare said, “You don’t see what goes on in practice, but they’re dedicated kids who put the work in.”
